If you are looking for a Palm Beach Zoo review that goes beyond a regular walk through the exhibits, the animal experiences are what make our visit stand out. During our trip to the Palm Beach Zoo in West Palm Beach, we booked the Aldabra tortoise experience, giving us a closer look at one of the zoo’s gentle giants and a better sense of whether these add-on encounters are a good choice for families, locals, or anyone planning a South Florida zoo day.
We visited with my son, his girlfriend, and my daughter, and originally hoped to book the koala experience. Those spots can fill quickly, though, and since our visit was planned only about a week in advance, we chose the Aldabra tortoise experience instead. It ended up being a much more memorable encounter than I expected.
What Is a Palm Beach Zoo Animal Experience?
A Palm Beach Zoo animal experience is a separate add-on that gives guests a closer look at select animals with the guidance of the zoo’s animal care team. These are not the same as walking past an exhibit during a regular visit. The experience is more personal, more educational, and gives you a chance to see the animals from a different perspective.
The current Palm Beach Zoo animal experiences include options such as Otter, Flamingo, Giant Aldabra Tortoise, Sloth, Koala, Panther, Tiger, and Bear. The available animals, schedules, ages, and prices can change, so I would always check the official page before choosing one.
It is also important to know that animal experiences require a separate ticket from regular zoo admission. The zoo’s animal experience FAQs note that advance registration is required, guests should arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled time, and that closed-toe shoes are required for all animal experiences.
If you are planning a full day at the zoo, my Palm Beach Zoo membership and discounts guide is a helpful place to compare regular admission, discounts, and whether a membership makes sense for your family.
Our Aldabra Tortoise Experience
The Aldabra tortoise experience gave us the chance to step behind the scenes and see one of the zoo’s most impressive animals from a much closer perspective. My daughter was able to feed Noto, who was the oldest tortoise at the zoo at the time of our visit. The zookeeper gave each of us sticks with raw sweet potatoes so we could safely feed the tortoise while learning more about the species.

There is something very different about standing that close to an animal you usually only see from the other side of a fence. Aldabra tortoises move slowly, but they have so much presence. Their size alone is impressive, and being able to feed one made the whole experience feel more personal.
The zookeeper also shared facts throughout the encounter, which made it feel educational without being stiff or overly formal. It was relaxed, but still guided enough that we understood what to do, where to stand, and how to interact respectfully.
At the time of our visit, there was also an older kangaroo lounging nearby in the area. That was a fun surprise and gave the experience another little moment we were not expecting.

What Surprised Me
The thing that surprised me most was learning that tortoises can feel touch through their shells. I had always thought of the shell as something hard and almost disconnected, but the zookeeper explained that they can feel it and that many tortoises enjoy being brushed or scratched.

That detail stuck with me because it changed how I looked at the animal standing in front of us. It made the encounter feel less like we were simply observing and more like we were learning something personal about the animal’s behavior.
I also appreciated that the experience did not feel rushed. Palm Beach Zoo lists its animal experiences as 30 minutes long, and that felt like enough time to enjoy the moment without it dragging or feeling too short. It gave us time to feed, listen, take photos, and enjoy the setting.
The zoo does allow cameras during animal experiences, although some behind-the-scenes areas may restrict photos or video. The zoologist will let you know what is allowed once you are there.
Other Palm Beach Zoo Animal Experiences to Consider
If I were booking again, I would still be tempted by the koala experience. The zoo’s koala experience is non-contact, but it gives guests the chance to see the koalas up close and learn more about them. Because of Australian government regulations, guests are not allowed to hold or touch the koalas, which is good to know before booking.
The otter experience also sounds like a fun option, especially for older kids, since the minimum age is currently listed as 10. The flamingo experience has a minimum age of 8, while some other experiences, including the Giant Aldabra Tortoise, Sloth, Koala, Panther, and Tiger experiences, are listed with no minimum age. Even when there is no minimum age, everyone entering the experience area must purchase a ticket, including toddlers.
For families with younger children, the tortoise experience is probably one of the easiest options to consider. It is calm, interesting, and not as intimidating as a larger animal encounter might feel for a first experience.
Tips Before Booking
Before booking a Palm Beach Zoo animal experience, I would check the current schedule and availability first. Some experiences are only offered on certain days or at specific times, and popular options can sell out.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Book in advance when possible.
- Buy regular zoo admission separately.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early.
- Wear closed-toe shoes.
- Bring water, especially in warmer weather.
- Complete any required waivers before your visit.
- Check the age requirements for the specific animal experience.
- Remember that animal interaction is never guaranteed.
That last point matters. The zoo makes it clear that the animals’ wellbeing comes first. Some encounters are non-contact, and even when safe interaction is possible, the animals are not forced to participate. I actually like that approach because it keeps the experience respectful and focused on the animal, not just the guest.
The Palm Beach Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4:15 p.m., and parking is free. Since hours, admission, and policies can change, check the official Palm Beach Zoo plan your visit page before you go.
A Memorable Way to Visit the Zoo
I have been to the Palm Beach Zoo several times over the years, including visits with my boys when they were young. I have always liked seeing familiar local places add something new, and the animal experiences give the zoo a reason to feel fresh even if you have been before.

The Aldabra tortoise experience was not our original first choice, but it ended up being exactly the kind of visit I enjoy most: relaxed, interesting, and personal enough to remember. It gave us a closer look at an animal we might have otherwise walked past more quickly, and it made the day feel like more than a regular zoo outing.
For anyone looking through Palm Beach Zoo reviews and wondering whether the animal experiences are worth adding to a visit, I would say they are best for people who enjoy learning a little more, taking photos, and having a quieter behind-the-scenes moment. You do not need to do one every time you visit, but for a birthday, family outing, grandparent day, or special South Florida experience, it can make the visit feel more memorable.
It is one more reason I enjoy having places like this nearby. West Palm Beach has plenty of simple local outings that do not require a big trip, and this experience gave us a chance to see a familiar zoo in a slightly different way. It fits with the everyday side of living in West Palm Beach, where an easy afternoon can still turn into something memorable.
