With school back in session the Shibley household has finally settled into a nice routine. From the morning shuffle to after school homework. From bedtimes to getting up on time. This is one of the things I do love when the kids are back in school. I also love that my daughter is no longer bored and is enjoying everything she is learning in 4th grade. She amazes how she remembers even the smallest details of what she is learning in class. Her favorite subject, math, is no surprise to my husband and I as we both also enjoyed the subject in school.
Honey has always loved math and before she had her own iPad I would purchase math books and print of worksheets for her to do just for fun. She especially loved the ones that the answer corresponded to a letter and she was trying to solve the riddle. Of course these days everything has moved to more of a digital way of playing. I was recently asked if I would like to review the iTooch app (which is available for both iOS and Android). My daughter loves testing out new children’s apps for me so I figured it would be a great fit. Though this is a free app our review is of the paid version that is specific to each grade level. For $9.99 we were able to select a grade level which will be more challenging for her.
iTouch App 4th Grade
When we first downloaded the am I was pleased that even though I know my daughter would gravitate towards the math there was also learning for both language arts and science. There is also a school version which is a great way to introduce electronics and learning into your child’s school. As I suspected my daughter first decided to review the math. Once you have selected Math you are able to select what you would like to work with: numbers and operations, fractions and decimals, measurement and data, graphs and statistics, or geometry.

From their you can drill down even further on what it is exactly your child would like to learn. In the example below we decided to go with word problems.
Honey was given a handful of problems, similar to a practice test and then she was ready to take the test.
After taking the test she received her score. She scored enough points to earn her white belt and move on to level 2. I have to say the problems were definitely thought provoking and age level appropriate. Many of them took some extra concentration to figure out.
On to Language Arts where you can select between writing and composition, vocabulary booster, reading research and reasoning, and communication. I have to say Language Arts was my least favorite subject in school. Something about that grammar and context clues just didn’t interest me one bit. For our review we decided to go with the Spelling.
In this review we purposely got some of the answers wrong to see what would happen. As you can see we received a B- which did not allow us to advance to the next level.
I think this is a good way to make sure that the child is understanding what they are learning and isn’t just moving up to the next level because they have tried the 1st. As your child finishes each level the medallion will fill with gold.
Science is a so-so subject for my daughter. Sometimes she enjoys what she learns and other times she finds it a little confusing. She loved when they learned about plants and the earth but is not really interested in other aspects like the theories and hypothesis, etc. When we selected Science we were able to select between life science, earth systems science and physical science. For our review we chose Earth Systems Science. There are some very interesting subjects to choose from such as clouds, seasonal changes constellations, etc. Definitely enough to keep your child busy.
The iTooch App has over 18,000 exercises and is intended to grow with your child since you can make sure that they are learning age level appropriate material. This will challenge them without making it to easy or too hard.
It covers Math, Language Arts curricula from Grade 1 to Grade 5, Science is also included from Grade 3 to Grade 5. iTooch Elementary is a full learning solution which helps parents, teachers and students to identify and address their learning needs in a fun and motivating way !
The iTooch Elementary application contains:
- Ten titles that can be tested for free before being purchased,
- Between 40 and 60 chapters per title with lessons, examples, and figures,
- Between 1,500 and 4,500 questions per title with clues, detailed explanations and images which make it by far the most comprehensive educative tool on the App Store for students in Grades 3 to Grade 5.
I was very impressed with the app, as many apps are just too easy. I love that the app is challenging and I think it would make a great addition to any classroom.
What is your child’s or was your favorite subject in school?
