How do YOU pronounce chaise lounge chair? I had this debate with my husband and to this day it has not been solved, we both agree to disagree. The two most common ways I’ve heard are “Chase” and “Shayz”. I myself have never used the “Shayz” pronunciation. So why does this word cause such a debate and what is the right way to pronounce it?
Origin of Chaise
mid 17th cent.: from French, variant of chaire, from Latin cathedra ‘seat’, from Greek
Meaning of Chaise
- light open carriage for one or two people
- is an upholstered sofa in the shape of a chair that is long enough to support the legs.
- a carriage consisting of two wheels and calash top; drawn by a single horse
How to Pronounce Chaise
It depends on where you come from on what pronounciation you wish to use. French and English appear to be just a little different in how it is pronounced. Listen here. In English, chaise longue is sometimes pronounced with both words Anglicized: SHAYZ-LONG, but, along with chaise lounge, chaise is sometimes pronounced in the French manner: SHEZ
How do YOU pronounce chaise
The truth is no matter what the right or wrong way to pronounce chaise is what matters is that the person you are talking to knows what you are talking about. For me, it is a CHASE LOUNGE CHAIR
- Chase – like chasing someone down the street
- Lounge – like lounging around the house
But how do you pronounce it?
My guess is no one can agree on how this word is pronounced so the debate continues, similarly to which way do you put the toilet paper roll on, and is candy corn really candy? Maybe the key to solving this debate is to ask for a lounge chair instead ;).
