Why Kids Should Embrace Books and Enjoy Reading

Reading is one of those timeless joys that never goes out of style. It’s simple, fun, and all it really takes is grabbing a good book and letting the story pull you in. Sure, reading can feel tricky sometimes—especially when you’re just starting out—but that doesn’t make it any less magical. With a little encouragement, anyone can get swept away in the adventure hiding between the pages.

That’s exactly why kids should fall in love with reading! It’s a pastime humans have been enjoying for thousands of years, and for good reason. But the real magic of books goes beyond history—here are a few more reasons kids will always have a reason to love reading.

Books are Incredibly Accessible

Unlike screens, which cost a fortune and can be quite harmful to the brain, books are incredibly accessible. You can get them for free from libraries, pick up one to read at school whenever you fancy, and they go for pennies in thrift stores.  It’s easier than ever to find books that make reading more accessible for kids in particular. There are series dedicated to helping children learn how words work and refine their reading comprehension. If you pick up a few Decodables for them to try out, you’ll see this in action!  Books are a very accessible source of fun, and there’s an endless amount of fun to be had when you open up the pages!

Reading Helps to Build Imagination

When you read, you open up your mind to an entirely new world. You don’t have to leave your house, and you can go soaring through the skies on the backs of dragons or sitting around campfires with adventurers, or even hacking mainframes and talking to cyborgs!  It’s the kind of thing every kid loves to do! Reading means learning, and even imaginations need that. It’s rare that someone is able to come up with such new and exciting things in their own minds without having some inkling of how to craft these kinds of imaginary worlds and characters.  A bit of reading adds so much to the creativity muscles, and it makes spending time doing nothing a lot less boring!

There’s a Lot to Learn From Words

When kids stumble across a brand-new word in a book, their brains get an instant workout. This is their time to shine—figuring out how to decode and make sense of something they’ve never seen before. It’s like a mini problem-solving challenge happening right on the page. Even if they don’t pronounce the word perfectly, they’re still growing. They’re building vocabulary, practicing language rules, and sharpening their critical thinking skills all at once. That’s why kids should fall in love with reading—not only because it’s fun, but because it’s one of the best things they can do for their minds. And trust us, the benefits go way beyond the obvious!
