The Cost of Ignoring Strange Appliance Noises

strange appliance noises

Strange appliance noises can be a sign that all is not well. Over time, these can become worn and don’t work as well. However, even new appliances can have issues. From increased energy usage to compounding repairs, here are some examples.

Working the Appliance Harder

Small issues can snowball into major ones when appliances we take for granted work harder. That clunking sound your washer-dryer makes may not be a carelessly-placed tennis shoe, but something more concerning! Perhaps you need a dryer belt from an authorized dealer of Whirlpool parts before the one you have gives up. When these kinds of sounds happen, your appliances are usually trying to tell you something, so it is best to take notice and always check.

Increased Energy Usage

Appliances that are damaged have to work harder to achieve the results they usually would. Something like a failing dishwasher pump or clogged dryer vent puts strain on other parts, and the whole machine doesn’t work efficiently. These then require more power to do their jobs, and this, of course, ends up costing you more money on your bills. If you hear some strange sounds that weren’t there before, then call an expert to inspect the machine for potential problems.

Strange Appliance Noises Can Escalate

The average US home has between 10 and 17 appliances, such as the fridge, washing machine, and dryer. So you may want to lower your electricity costs when using so much. the issues with appliances that are making noises due to damage can become worse over time:

  • Struggling motors and obstructed fans need to work harder, using much more energy.
  • Foreign objects can cause filters to become blocked and cause tons of problems.
  • Call a professional if there are sudden changes, complex issues, or safety issues.

Compounding Repair Costs

Ignoring seemingly small problems can lead to much larger ones. Over time, you will get used to the sounds an appliance should make, and when something is off, you can hear it. A minor fix for something like a washing machine, such as ball bearing replacement, is cheap. Ignoring noises can cause inexpensive issues to have a knock-on effect and cause problems that just get worse. In the end, repair costs escalate, and you may have to consider getting a replacement.

Major Safety Hazards

Many of the devices we use at home are dangerous when they are left to become worn and torn. Washing machines, the fridge, and HVAC are good examples of appliances that can get dangerous. Electrical faults, fire hazards, and water damage are all possible when you ignore strange sounds coming from an appliance. Electrical sounds include humming and buzzing. Water sounds include leaks, and fire hazard sounds include crackling from inside a machine.

Summary

When a machine works harder than it should, strange appliance noises can usually be heard. These noises can indicate an escalation of issues when you ignore them, and these can cause electrical, fire, and water hazards. Listen for crackling, buzzing, and the sounds of water.
