One major difference I noticed after my significant weight loss was how much easier it became to see the wrinkles and fine lines in my face. When I was heavier, my face was fuller and naturally filled out some of those lines. While I would never want to go back to the weight I was before, I do miss some of that naturally fuller and more youthful appearance.
At 52, I have the normal forehead wrinkles, deeper laugh lines, and thinner skin under my eyes that many women over 50 begin to notice. I also started realizing my skin texture was changing, and my makeup wasn’t sitting as smoothly as it once did. Instead of turning to expensive procedures or injections, I decided I wanted to focus on a realistic skincare routine that I could actually maintain long term.
I am personally not interested in cosmetic procedures. Between the possible side effects, upkeep, and ongoing costs, it simply is not something I want to pursue. Instead, I started researching simple ways to better care for mature skin at home. After speaking with my dermatologist, he prescribed Tretinoin 0.1%, and over the last several months, I slowly built a skincare routine around it using mostly affordable products I can easily purchase at local drugstores.
To my surprise, my skin now simply looks healthier and more alive.
The Biggest Skin Changes I Noticed After 50
As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen, elasticity, and moisture. Many women over 50 also notice:
- deeper fine lines and wrinkles
- dullness
- rougher skin texture
- dryness
- loss of firmness
- makeup settling into lines
- slower skin cell turnover
For me personally, the biggest issue after weight loss was how much more noticeable my deeper facial lines became. I knew no cream was magically going to erase wrinkles completely, but I wanted my skin to look healthier, brighter, firmer, and more hydrated.
That realistic mindset helped me focus more on prevention and maintenance instead of chasing perfection.
My Current Over 50 Skincare Routine
My skincare routine is actually very low-maintenance and realistic. I wash my face morning and night, but most of my nighttime routine happens while relaxing in the bathtub after work. I have a wooden bath tray that extends across the tub where I keep most of my skincare supplies nearby. It has honestly become one of my favorite forms of self-care.
Before my bath, I use my Omnilux red light therapy mask for 10 minutes while listening to an audiobook with my headphones on. It has become a relaxing little ritual I genuinely look forward to.

Morning Routine
Each morning I:
- Wash my face with Cetaphil Gentle Foaming Cleanser
- Apply a pea-sized amount of Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer
- Use makeup only when needed
I only wear full makeup about three days a week when I go into work. On days at home, I usually skip makeup completely or just wear a light tinted moisturizer with mascara and lipstick.
One thing I think has also contributed to healthier-looking skin is hydration. I drink water throughout the entire day and very rarely drink anything else besides an occasional weekend cocktail. My skin definitely appears more hydrated now than it did years ago.

My Nighttime Skincare Routine
At night, after removing makeup and washing my face, I rotate between Tretinoin nights and red light therapy nights.
Red Light Therapy Nights
Three nights a week, I use my Omnilux Contour Mask as part of my evening routine. Since starting red light therapy in March, I have noticed improvements mostly in my skin texture, brightness, firmness, and overall appearance. My wrinkles are still there, and I still rely on makeup to help soften them, but my skin overall simply looks healthier and more alive.
I originally chose the Omnilux mask because my sister had already done extensive research on red light therapy and recommended it. I will admit it was expensive, but I was able to purchase it through my FSA account using pre-tax dollars, which helped offset some of the cost.
Tretinoin Nights
On opposite nights, I use my prescription Tretinoin cream. One thing that really helped me was introducing Tretinoin very slowly, especially if you are over 50 and dealing with mature skin. I tolerated it well because I took my time introducing it gradually. When I first started using Tretinoin in January, I used the “sandwich method,” which helped minimize irritation and peeling:
- Apply a layer of CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, let it dry
- Apply a small amount of Tretinoin, let it dry
- Apply another layer of moisturizer
At first, I only used it every two nights and gave my skin breaks in between applications whenever I noticed even slight peeling or sensitivity. Even now, I still occasionally take a night or two off to let my skin breathe if I notice dryness starting again. I think this slower approach made a huge difference in helping my skin adjust comfortably.
Because Tretinoin can make skin more sensitive to the sun, daily sunscreen is also generally recommended when using it.
The Affordable Products I Personally Use
One thing I love about my current routine is that it is not filled with expensive luxury skincare.
Most of the products I use are affordable and easy to find:
- Cetaphil Gentle Foaming Cleanser
- Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer
- CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream
- Prescription Tretinoin
- Omnilux Contour Mask
I also use ultra-soft facial washcloths because mature skin can become more sensitive over time, especially while using Tretinoin. The softer fabric feels much gentler on my skin during cleansing and makeup removal.
What Improved Most in My Skin
Since starting this routine, the biggest improvements I have noticed are:
- smoother skin texture
- brighter-looking skin
- fewer clogged pores and whiteheads
- firmer appearance
- better hydration
- makeup applying more smoothly
One thing I specifically noticed was a reduction in the whiteheads and clogged pores I used to frequently get on the right side of my face, which happens to be the side I sleep on most often.
Most importantly, my skin simply looks healthier and more alive now.
My Thoughts on Aging Skin Over 50
If I could go back in time, I definitely wish I had taken better care of my skin when I was younger. But I also think there is something freeing about reaching your 50s and realizing skincare does not have to be perfect or overly complicated. I am not trying to look 25 again.
I simply want my skin to feel healthy, hydrated, comfortable, and cared for. That same realistic approach applies to my hair too, which is why I like simple tips for healthier-looking hair that focus on softness, moisture, and everyday care instead of chasing perfection. This routine has helped me do exactly that without expensive procedures, overwhelming products, or unrealistic expectations.
