I’m sure you have written down all your new year’s resolutions and are well on your way to keeping them right? I get the thought process that it is a new year, a time to begin, to start, or commit. However I could quote site after site that show the statistics say we don’t stick to our resolutions. I beg the question why do we commit to something only because it is a new year? What about the other 11 months out of the year?
Often our resolutions are big and bold and we think we should finish them in a matter of days, thus setting ourselves up to fail before we begin. So instead I challenge you to throw out your resolutions and stop measuring yourself by what you said you would do in January. Instead I offer you the opportunity to set small goals, form new habits, and continue working through your goals all year long and even into the next year with no need to re-commit just because it is a new year.
Are You Ready?
I have struggled on and off with weight gain my whole life. My first diet was when I was in 6th grade. They always tell you to figure out why you over eat. I truly believe I have no emotional reasons I just LOVE food! Like many people I decide today is going to be the day and I expect myself to totally change the way I eat, work out, and repeat. However that is an awful lot of changing for one person in one day.

After many years of losing and gaining I know believe that everything is in moderation and the key is to change your life style one habit at a time. So one of my habits to form this year is to start moving and exercising. I spend way too many hours sitting. It turns out I’m not the only one that wants to make this change. Both my husband and son want to join me on this journey. One thing I knew right away was that if my husband and I were going to do this together he needed to rethink how he sees the gym and start small.
My husband as always been one of those people that feels that more is better when it comes to the gym. He wants to lift, lift often, and lift heavy. While this worked for us 20 years ago that is not really where I am in my life and what motivates me. I didn’t have to do much to convince him he too is beginning to realize that small changes and any changes are better than no changes.

Habit Forming Tips To a Healthier You
The statistics say it takes 21 days to make a habit. Here are some small changes you can make and keep for 21 days to form new habits. After you have completed one add another.
- Drink water instead of soda, or if you don’t drink soda drink more water each day until you get to the recommended amount daily.
- No elevators and park further way from the entrance.
- Get 7-9 hours of sleep each day.
- Switch out an unhealthy snack for a healthy one such as fruit, protein, veggie sticks, etc.
- Take a meal and make it healthier, for example instead of eating a sugary cereal for breakfast try egg whites, oatmeal, or a healthier cereal option.
- Chose an exercise such as sit-ups and add them to your routine, or if you don’t have one let it be the beginning of your routine.
- Meditate for 30 minutes a day. Sometimes you need just a little you time
Whatever you want to do just take it one step at a time and create small changes that you can turn into a habit and a way of life. It is much easier than trying to revamp your entire way of living overnight!
