Oxiclean is not new to me in the sense that I have of course heard of it before. However it is new in the sense that I’ve never tried it before. I am now an owner of a big tub of the stain removing powder. I was amazed at how many uses one product can have from laundry, to carpet, to even just every day cleaning.
I think what Oxiclean is known for is its stain removal properties when used in your laundry. To test out how well it works we did a home test using a white shirt. I had one of the boys stain it for me with three of our most common stains, dirt, ketchup, and soda. One of my other common stains is clay from the baseball field however we didn’t have any on hand for this experiment.
Honey was all about this experiment and helped me get prepared. We followed the directions found on the tub and decided since these were tough stains we would use the pre-soak method.
Once the solution was made we soaked the shirt for a good 6-7 hours. It just so happened the whites were last on my list of clothes to wash this weekend so the timing was perfect. Below is a before and after photo of our white shirt.
As you can see the dirt and soda stains came out with no problem, however the ketchup stain seems to be a much tougher problem. I decided to give it another chance and this time I did not soak it but I put a little OxiClean directly on the stain and rubbed it in. Then I sent it through the wash again.
As you can see the stain is much lighter then previously. What this experiment has taught me is that a stain such as ketchup or any other bright colored stain needs to be pretreated individually before pre-soaked. I feel confident that I will be able to remove this stain with a little more care, however I also feel if I had pretreated then pre-soaked it before sending through the wash it would have come out the first time.
In addition to laundry OxiClean can be used on several household stains. For us where this would come in handy is carpet. Our stains tend to mysteriously appear on our carpet. From lipstick to food no one seems to know how they got there. Like I said it is a mystery! Honestly I would be surprised if the OxiClean can get old stains and found that as I suspected it can not. We currently do not have any new stains to give this product a test drive on our carpet.
What I would love to know is if OxiClean can be added to steam cleaners? I tried researching on the OxiClean website to see if this is an option but did not find that it was, so for now I’m going to forgo that as an experiment. However while browsing the site I found that I loved the little stain fighter solution center in the right hand side bar. You can select your stain and material and OxiClean will give you the solution to remove your stain. For example I selected make up on cotton. Once you select these two items you can tell them what type of OxiClean you are using and VIOLA! your solution appears. I of course selected Powder since that is what I have on hand.
