My youngest son is getting ready to graduate this year YAY! I will be honest, I didn’t expect him to even consider going to college as I feel lucky to have gotten him through high school. Not for lack of intelligence but lack of motivation. My son has always been the type of person that found school an annoyance, he wants to just get on with his life. However this last year has been an eye opener for him and he seems to realize that if he wants to make a good living he needs to attend college.
Just this past week we attended an informational session at our local state college with his urging. He seems to have a plan in mind and the only thing that is damping his plans is the cost of college. Unfortunately we had not signed up for Florida Prepaid plans for our children and we truly regret it now. How nice it would be for them to have that burden lifted so they could concentrate on their studies. It is not too late for you, but time is running out. Open enrollment in the plan ends this month.
I often shy away from things I’m not 100% sure how they work but I have written several posts in the past few months helping take the fear out of signing up for a Florida Prepaid Plan:
- Debt Free College with Florida Prepaid
- Give the Gift of Education with a Florida Prepaid Plan
- Florida Prepaid College Open Enrollment Has Begun
- Florida Prepaid Two Year College Plans
If you are still struggling with the idea of signing up and if you should let me debunk some of the myths about the plan to help ease your mind.
Myth: Florida Prepaid is restricted to Florida schools.
Fact: It isn’t restricted to Florida schools; the amount covered by your Prepaid Plan can be used at schools nationwide.
Myth: Florida Prepaid can only be used if my child remains a Florida resident.
Fact: If the beneficiary moves out of Florida after purchasing a Prepaid Plan, your child would still be billed at in-state tuition rates when using their plan at a Florida college or state university.
Myth: If my child doesn’t go to college, I lose all that money.
Fact: If your child doesn’t go to college, you can change the beneficiary of the Prepaid Plan or get your money back.
