I absolutely LOVE the “For Dummies” series of books. They are always so straight to the point and logical that well….even a dummy could understand. I recently had the chance to review. Now I will be honest I am not a novice when it comes to the iPhone I have had one since the original. However I thought it would be a good read and maybe I would pick up a new feature or two. I haven’t really used my iPhone 5 to its full potential. I haven’t really delved into any of the new features at all.
If you have an iPhone 5, or any iPhone for that matter, you know that it doesn’t really come with much of a guide. I cracked open thebook and sat down to see what I could discover. For a new iPhone user it was nice to see the iPhone dissected so you know where each part and feature is (physically like the speaker, microphone, etc.)
One of the things that drove me crazy when I updated to the iPhone 5 was the alerts. I was getting them left and right and I noticed the style had changed. Sometimes change is great other times we simply prefer the old. I was glad I could switch back.
For many iPhone users iCloud is not a new concept but for new iPhone users it not only is but can seem confusing at first. There is a section on Understanding iCloud which I think is very helpful. I use iCloud mainly for my calendar. It is great to be able to add appointments on my phone while making them at the doctors office or pulling up iCloud at work. iCloud syncs with all my devices, iPhone, iPad, and iMac so it is very convenient.
I found a new feature I was unaware of and that was “Reminders”. What I think is pretty unique about this is the ability to set to be reminded when you are at a specific location. You can chose remind me at a location, select your current location and then chose when I arrive or leave. Or you can chose an address or enter an address. As long as the location feature is turned on for this app in your settings your phone will remind you at the given location. I tested it for this posting and noticed when the reminder came up it came up on both my phone and my computer (because I had used iCloud). The sound however was to low and not something that would “really” remind me. Then I found in the settings you could change this. This is exactly what I’ve always felt the iPhone was missing. I’m going right now to set it to remind me of my dentist appointment this week (being on vacation I will totally forget!)
The Passbook is also something new to me. I have used it once when looking for a deal at a store we were in. I was able to save it to the Passbook for easy retrieval at the register.
One of my FAVORITE just “cool” features is the ability to take Panorama photographs. The book explains how to do it, but honestly it is pretty self explanatory. That is if you knew there was such a feature. Many times it is not learning how to use the feature that is the problem it is knowing a feature exists. There is a whole section on taking photos with your iPhone 5.
In addition to the review above I’ve included a 6 minute video highlighting some of these features and how to use them on your own iPhone.
