Reading is one of my favorite pastimes, growing up I would often find myself immersed in book. I would get completely swept away with this fictional land or that. I have to say it definitely helped me develop a healthy imagination and has contributed to my creativity as well. I also loved sharing my favorite stories with my children as they were growing up. I’d read to them as often as I can, though I have to say the stories they loved best were those I made up and of course featured them as the main characters! I recently learned of a collection of interactive books called Imaginary Friends that does almost the same thing. It’s a choose your own adventure that immerses the whole family into the story!
Each book from Imaginary Friends arrives as an adventure kit at your door – each chapter is separately bound. This is where you step in to truly make each part of the experience unique to your child. You’ll log into a simple, easy-to-use platform to personalize each adventure allowing your child to become part of the story! After you’ve personalized the chapter, let your child start the first chapter. They’ll be reading, playing games, and doing real life activities including treasure hunts to find digital clues to advance the book or save a hero.

At the end of each chapter, the character needs help. Each mission is different and might have your child playing an online game or participating in an activity you’ve pre-approved. There are even scenarios where you can determine locations and have your child follow through GPS on a smartphone. When then arrive at each destination, they’ll receive a new clue. You can even schedule a personalized phone call from a character in the book. Imagine their surprise when the hero tells them what a great job they’ve done!

Currently on Kickstarter, Imaginary Friends is raising money to continue their interactive story lines. And they want our ideas! Parents can give insight on what new plots and adventures our children would like to see. There are various donation and reward options, but regardless of donation size, each donator will become part of the advisor community. Encouraging children to read and experience their own adventures is definitely a program I can get behind!
