Not too long ago I received a flyer in the mail for a sale on a Sleep Number Bed. In the back of my mind I had already been contemplating the purchase of a good mattress. My thoughts are life would be so different with a really good nights sleep! So I started putting the bug in my husband’s ear about a possible dual Christmas present.
As luck would have it I will not be waiting until Christmas. My new sleep number bed should be arriving soon. I can’t wait to really try it out and give you a full on review of what we think. However before it arrives we had the opportunity to speak with the manager, Jonathan Drinkwater, at our local Sleep Number store to learn more about why these beds are so great.
Many thanks to Jonathan, he was extremely friendly, and very knowledgeable and I felt very relaxed (though it is hard not too when laying on a Sleep Number Bed). There were three key features that I learned about and loved while we were in the store. The first was finding our sleep number. We laid down on a bed that had thousands of sensors in it to give us a 3D picture of the pressure points of our body when lying on the mattress.
We initially got on the bed set at a Sleep Number of 100. Felt like a normal bed, a little firm. Jonathan then began to lower our sleep numbers until we said stop. My husband stopped him at about 35 and myself at 25 (men it seems tend to prefer a firmer mattress then women). After relaxing and talking we took us back up to 100. After our bodies had adjusted to the lower Sleep Number the bed now felt like a rock that was pressing against my body.
Jonathan turned on the screen and showed how the sensors were showing where the pressure points were on my body. As he lowered the bed back down slowly to my own Sleep Number you could see the red areas turn orange, then yellow, and get lighter. This showed the pressure was being relieved.
The second feature that I had read about but didn’t really think much about was the temperature control. The beds react to the temperature of your body to keep your side of the bed comfortable. I thought this sounded great but didn’t put a lot of stock in it until I experienced it. I didn’t realize I was experiencing it. You don’t lay down and feel hot or cold. When we entered the store it was a little chilly but not terrible. We laid on the bed for a while and then moved to another bed. When we moved I would stand and talk for a little bit. I noticed after about a minute I was freezing. Then I laid on another bed and within a minute I was comfortable. It was when we were moving to the third bed that I realized it was the bed that was making me comfortable. I was totally blown away by how the bed could change to regulate how comfortable I felt by my own body temperature.
The third feature which is the BEST and unfortunately not one I will have with my new bed is the adjustable frame feature. When most people think of a Sleep Number bed they think of the beds that can adjust to a sitting position. This is an upgrade. The Sleep Number mattresses come with a standard platform base (if you don’t already have one). When Jonathan adjusted our head and feet slightly up immediately I was more comfortable then I had ever been lying on a bed in my life. I am totally SOLD on the adjustable frame. If you have the opportunity I suggest that you purchase a little cheaper Sleep Number mattress and splurge on this feature. Our bed was already ordered and on its way and the adjustable frame was not one of our options. However remember I said I was putting the bug about a Christmas present in my husband’s ear? I’m thinking that this should definitely be at the top of my “gotta have” list.
The only thing better would be a split king, in which each side of the bed can be adjusted up or down on its own. However that would be purchasing an entire new bed.
So there you have it in a nutshell, how I found my sleep number and the features that I think make this mattress A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Look for a post in a week or so after our Sleep Number bed is installed and we transform our room into a Sleep Haven.
